The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is making a digital turn in order to ease the viewing and submission of property tax in Mumbai. BMC is planning to launch software which will prove beneficial to both the taxpayers and to the corporation. On one hand, the property owners will be able to view and pay the property tax online and on the other BMC will also record an increase in revenue as the landlords will be aware of the tax liability on a click of the internet with the launch of software.

Till now, BMC – Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation use to send individual property tax to the landlords and flat owners residing in housing societies. But, the flat owners have to take written approval from the society to get a separate bill from BMC. So, the online availability of property tax details will make payment of the same easier in Mumbai soon.

Both, the property registration department and property tax department of BMC will work together after the launch of software as they both work independently at present. This synchronization between the two departments will help the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to track new entries in its database. In the current scenario, a total of 2 lac 75 thousand buildings in Mumbai are liable to pay property tax and the BMC collects Rs 5,200 crore approximately as property tax.

This software is widely beneficial as it will offer detailed information on property tax, liability and billing date to the owners and will also help the BMC to catch defaulters. Till now, the housing society pays fine in case some of the flat owners fail to pay their property tax on time. But the online property tax system will protect the housing societies from paying the extra amount as fine for not submitting property tax timely. The BMC – Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation can seal the premises in case the housing society fails to submit its property tax bill in a timely manner. This year BMC has sealed 200 properties for non-payment of the property tax.
