The Maharastra State Government assigned MHADA – Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority as a special planning authority to enhance affordable housing under PMAY [Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana] Scheme.

From now, MHADA won’t require permission from BMC – Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation the local authority for developing 114 MHADA layouts in the city and suburbs. The Urban Development Department of Devendra Fadnavis-led State Government issued a notification on Wednesday stating that this appointment is in immediate effect. The timely and quick development of MHADA layouts due to the Single-window clearing system from now onwards will boost the affordable housing segment at large in the State.

Also, from now the developers are not required to approach civic bodies for permission separately and the same is applicable for the current and future MHADA layouts. The elevation of MHADA as a special planning authority will enable them to approve building plans on its layouts and will reduce the clearance time involved in approval of developers plan from BMC even after getting approved from MHADA.

MHADA is also a nodal agency for the projects falling under PPP [public-private partnership] model.  The State Government has proposed the construction of 19 lakh affordable homes in Maharastra by 2022 under the PMAY Scheme. The check for approval from various State Government agencies hinder the construction of housing projects thus the decision to assign MHADA as a special planning authority is welcomed by various housing activists.
