In Karnataka, Property owners in more than 6,000 gram panchayats can soon pay taxes online through digital wallets/debit cards/credit cards as the rural development and gram panchayat department are ready to launch online digital tax payment system soon.
Till now, the taxpayers had to queue in line at the revenue offices to make tax payments in cash/cheque/DD. But, the introduction of digital payment portal will allow the property owners to pay taxes from the comfort of their homes. The department has taken up this as an initiative to improve tax collection and more such initiatives will be introduced in the future.
A senior official said that the new system will be introduced in 15-20 days and it will allow the property owners to pay taxes via digital wallets such as Paytm/debit card/credit. This system will largely benefit in semi-urban localities like Belagavi, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Udupi, Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts.
The official further said that the department is looking to introduce swipe machines or POS also known as the Point of Sale devices in Bengaluru Rural and Chikkaballapura as it will prove helpful in tax collection on cordless machines.
The rural Karnataka recorded an increase in property tax collection by Rs. 130 crore for the last fiscal year. This increase is achieved as KG Jagadeesh trained more than 9,000 personnel about working on the new system.
Jagadeesh, an assistant project officer said that the gram panchayats too much dependent on the Government to sanction even the small projects too.
The official was acknowledged by the department and said that increased revenue is expected in this financial year. On the same, Jagadeesh said that Kannamangala GP in Bengaluru Rural witnessed a six-time jump in its property tax revenue that total over Rs. 7 crores.
