The residents of Chandigarh will soon get a property tax payment reminder on the mobile from the Municipal Corporation. The civic body in collaboration with the IT department has planned to send detailed SMS to the property taxpayer to submit the due latest by 31st May and will also alert the residents of penalty and other charges in case of missing the deadline.
This is the first time when the Chandigarh civic body will send more than one lakh SMSs to the property owners to increase the chance of maximum tax collection.
The Municipal Corporation aims to collect more than Rs. 50-crore from the property tax of both residential as well as from commercial establishments. Earlier to this, the civic body has started sending property tax door to door in order to collect maximum tax amount.
As per the records of the Municipal Corporation’s tax department, there are approximately 26,000 commercial and nearly 80,000 residential properties in the city. However, the commercial establishments have increased marginally in the current fiscal year including the properties of five newly added villages in the tax circle.
One of the senior officials said that the civic body has sent details of each property including both residential as well as the commercial to the IT department. The details include area covered by the property, property zone and more.
The official further said that SMS will inform the taxpayer to avoid the last date of property tax submission in order to avoid penalty. The civic body is not leaving behind to keep the taxpayers updated about making the timely payment of property tax within the given timeframe.
The IT department charge 3 paisa per SMS and thus the civic body is incurring a cost of Rs. 3,000 to send these messages.
The official also said that the amount spent on the SMSs is nominal as we spend thousands of rupees on advertisements, public notices and more.
