Known as CGHS i.e. Cooperative group housing societies in the national capital Delhi can now get solar panels installed on a rooftop without paying anything.

The Delhi cabinet has approved the same under the Mukhyamantri Solar Power Scheme and the rule is applicable for both including the group housing societies and independent houses.

Satyendar Jain, Delhi power minister stated that the Delhi Government has to get into a tripartite agreement with various housing societies government and the service provider to get solar panels installation done under Renewable Energy Service Company [RESCO], model. Also, the private company will bear the installation cost for the same.

Jain, the power minister of Delhi also said that the companies can sell additional power to the grid in case, co-operative housing societies offer them more space to install solar panels then what is actually required. The power generated by these solar panels will be used by CGHS to enlighten light in common areas, run elevators and water pumps just at a cost of Rs 1 per unit. The overall costing of solar energy generation is Rs.3 per unit, but the Delhi Government will provide a generation-based incentive [GBI] of Rs. 2 on each unit of power consumed by the housing societies.

The minister said, at the installation cost of solar panel for an independent house range between Rs.45,000-55,000 and the owners have to bear the cost of the same as the Delhi Government will not be a part of the agreement signed between the house owner and service provider. But they will also get an incentive of Rs 2 and the additional energy generated via the solar panels can be sold to the grid.

In order to make terrace available for other purposes, the solar panels should be installed at a height of 2.4m (8 feet) on both the independent houses and in group housing societies. The city has installed 100-MW solar energy from the notification of Delhi Solar Policy 2016 and these panels are installed on government buildings, such as DMRC, DJB and technical institutions, apart from Mandoli Jail, Azadpur Mandi, Dwarka courts, schools, Dilli Haat and bus depots.
