The administration of Chandigarh, the Union Territory will discuss the matter of fixing conversion charges from leasehold to freehold with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs [MHA]. The discussion will take place on the conversion charge of the Industrial area Phase I and II. This meeting is expected to be held next week.

One of the senior officials said that the UT administration has given approval for the proposal but have to discuss the matter regarding to land and rates for fixed conversion charges with the officials of Ministry of Home Affairs. The official also informed that the notification for conversion charges will be issued after receiving approval from the MHA.

Recently, the UT administration finalized the draft proposal to convert leasehold properties into freehold in the Industrial area Phase I and II.

Kirron Kher, the Member of Parliament from Chandigarh had announced that the matter will be taken up with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The individual committees are also formed by the UT administration and one of them looks into the pending demands of industrialists and second one foresee the pending demands of traders.

For the last time, the plots were converted from leasehold to freehold under the commercial category in the year 1983.

The Industrial areas Phase I and II are set up by the administration in 1970s. These phases are set on an area of 147 acres. The zoning and architectural control administer these plots and are prepared according to the conditions.

In total there are 1,884 plots out of which 700 are in 1 kanal and above. Others include 443 and 180 plots measure into 10 and 15 Marla, respectively. In 5 Marla there are nearly 381 plots.
