In order to recover property tax dues from defaulters, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has recently compiled a list of such property owners and their outstanding dues. After the completion, it was revealed that these defaulters owe Rs 3,681 crore to the BMC.
The above list was compiled last week in which 323861 properties were found to have defaulted on the tax. Out of this, the top 100 property tax defaulters alone owe Rs 705 cr to the civic body.
As per the sources, the BMC has asked all the defaulters to submit the overdue money or else they will disconnect their water supply. The civic body is also planning to take stringent action in later stages if the dues are not submitted.
BMC has also released the list on their website. The top names in the list are Victoria Mills, Sterling Investment Corporation, Raghuvanshi Mills in Lower Parel, Vidhi Realtors, Amir Parks, and Amusement, Mhada HDIL, Nirmal Lifestyle, and J Kumar casting yard.
A senior BMC official said that the civic body has kept a target to collect Rs 5400 cr in the current fiscal. Among all the areas, K-East ward and G-South ward owe Rs 423 cr and Rs 403 cr to BMC.
Giving more information on the same, Devidas Kshirsagar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Assessment and Collection said, “The top 100 defaulters mostly comprise commercial establishments rather than residential properties. The civic body has decided to cut their water connections first and then attach the property. If they will still not pay, we will disconnect it.”
To increase the vested interest of property owners, the BMC, every year, also offers a discount of 4% on paying property tax before June and 3% on making payments before July.
